Wow, It's Been A While!

Well, it's been since February that I last posted on here. Almost a year ago. A log has changed.

Hired Guns is doing AWESOME! We just rebranded and launched our new website at http://hiredgunscreative.com. It is a mix of a magazine-heavy aesthetic and Vegas hitman feel to showcase our design and technological chops. Check it out!

I have another child on the way. We are expecting in March and it looks like it will be a boy! We're thinking the name might be Everett Malcolm Botwright. Going to be exciting!

More to come!

Slicehost Server Setup Progress

Well, so far, so good!

The folks over at Slicehost with their great tutorials and the entire slice community have made it relatively easy for a greenhorn such as me to get up and running in a short period of time. We are currently running their recommended LAMP configuration (Ubuntu Linux 8.04 LTS, Apache, MySQL, and PHP) with Postfix and Courier for mail.

Switched Hosts

Just went through the enlightening process of moving the site from Media Temple over to the new Hired Guns server on Slicehost. We were in a shared environment (the Grid-Service) on Media Temple and having database connection issues. We attempted to follow all of the tweaking and configuration steps that Media Temple supplied (and I applaud them for their patience with us) but to no avail.

Card-Carrying Hired Gun

For anyone who has been to the site before (maybe a few people have), there is nothing really special about it right now. I threw together a Drupal install with a nice free theme I found by Rain City Studios, and VOILA! I haven't put a lot of work into it, but I'm hoping to change that.

Opera Mini Works on Samsung M510

This might have happened a while ago, but I sort of got tired of trying and failing to get Opera installed on my Samsung M510. This afternoon I did a Google search using the Mobile Browser for "opera mini", followed the first link, and FINALLY was able to download the great mobile browser, Opera!

My experience so far has been quite good, and the performance of Opera Mini on the M510 has not disappointed. The transition effects when you zoom in and out, and navigate from page to page, are smooth and slick.

New Website Up and Alive!

Took a few weeks, but now here it is. I am back up and better than ever.

A few details about the setup: Drupal. You talk to me and I will likely mention Drupal in a conversation about web development. It may not be the best system out there. It might not be the best performing or the most feature rich. It does have a few things that I truly admire and has thus enamored me. Modularity. Flexibility. Support. All good in my books.

Hello Peoples,

Since I have been inundated with questions about my new parenthood, I thought I would send this out to everyone to hopefully save everyone a few hours of lost productivity...

The Twelve Steps for Technoholics Anonymous

  1. We admit we are powerless over technology—that our lives have become unmanageable.
  2. Come to believe that a Technology greater than ourselves can restore us to sanity.
  3. Make a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of Technology as we understand It.
  4. Make a searching and fearless technological inventory of our
